It is with pleasure that we announce the appointment of Bruce Luxon, MD, PhD, as the new Chair of the Department of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, and the Chief of Service for the Department of Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. In addition to his chair and chief appointments, Dr. Luxon will hold the Anton and Margaret Fuisz Professorship in Medicine.

In his role at Georgetown, Dr. Luxon is responsible for fostering the clinical, educational and research missions (clinical, translational and basic) of the department. Dr. Luxon’s leadership will provide maximum support to the strengths and mission of each of these areas, and he will join the leadership at GUH/GUMC which has contributed greatly to the recent success of the Department of Medicine as well as provided access to resources and opportunities for growth from multiple entities.

Dr. Luxon joins Georgetown from the University of Iowa School of Medicine, where he is Professor of Internal Medicine, Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and holds the James A. Clifton Chair in Gastroenterology. Prior to joining the University of Iowa, he was Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program at Saint Louis University's School of Medicine. Dr. Luxon's clinical focus is in hepatology, with special expertise in autoimmune hepatitis and cholestatic liver diseases as well as hepatitis C. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Transplant Hepatology. His research focuses on hepatic stellate cells and the role they play in causing liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.

He is the recipient of the American Liver Foundation's Liver Scholar Award and has served as governor of the Missouri chapter of the American College of Gastroenterology as well as serving in a number of other leadership roles and receiving several academic awards. He also has served on several NIH study sections and is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association. He currently serves on several national committees including the National Affairs Committee of the ACG, the Training and Clinical Policy Committee of the AASLD. He is the Associate Liver Editor for the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He is also a reviewer for a number of scientific journals, including Hepatology, the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Luxon will join Georgetown on October 1, 2009.
